Vision for NKC

North Kansas City is a wonderful place to live, but I believe we can do more to forge a stronger, healthier community. We can definitely do a better job communicating with the residents - both providing information and soliciting honest feedback. Additionally, we can lean into the positive momentum in the city to promote our local businesses and encourage more businesses to choose NKC as their home.

Stronger Community

Regular, community-wide meals Partner with local restaurants and sponsors to bring the community together over a shared meal. The initial goal will be quarterly gatherings.

Neighbors helping neighbors Create a program where residents can register to help their neighbors with things like snow removal, yard work, home maintenance, and more.

Building strong youth Create opportunities for young people to connect and gain confidence, through thoughtfully designed spaces and play opportunities.

Civic engagement Actively solicit enthusiastic, qualified individuals to volunteer for boards and commissions. Promote the NKC Citizens Academy.

Healthy Residents

Community Health Committee Form a committee of experts in health fields – exercise, medicine, nutrition, mindfulness, etc. to advise residents on best practices.

Healthy menu items Work with local restaurants to identify, create, and highlight healthy menu options.

Walkability audit With our flat terrain, NKC can be an awesome place to walk, run, and bike. I want to make sure the infrastructure works for users of all abilities.

Trail network Continue to support the development of a regional trail network, connecting NKC to the greater metro via green spaces.

Open Communication

Centralized solution Seek a centralized communication solution (likely app-based), where the City can share timely information and solicit feedback from residents.

Town hall meetings I’ve hosted town halls on various topics, and I promise to continue to do so.

Accessibility Continue to be accessible to residents and businesses. I always acknowledge messages and respond in a timely manner.

Partnerships with neighbor cities Identify partnerships, synergies, and best practices through connection with local leaders in neighboring cities.

Community Safety

Police and Fire Continue to support the great work of our police and fire departments, including community engagement events.

Gun Violence Prevention Continue to advocate for community-driven, common-sense solutions to the scourge of gun violence, including identifying third spaces for youth.

Safe streets Identify areas of improvement for vehicle, bike, and pedestrian infrastructure, to decrease the risk of dangerous incidents.

Safe homes Identify unsafe living units and hold owners/landlords accountable to correct deficiencies. Step up codes enforcement for residential properties.

Economic Development

Economic Development Director Explore the possibility of creating a position that focuses on economic development incentives and marketing NKC to businesses.

Supporting local businesses Showcase existing businesses in NKC via videos. Partnering with the NKC Business Council and River North LLC to continue their great work.

Farmer’s Market Explore spaces to host a local farmer’s market, including the possibility of making downtown Armour Road pedestrian-only during some weekends.

Mindful Development Work with property owners to identify exciting projects that will honor the unique character of NKC.

Infrastructure

Water Infrastructure Implement plans and identify funding for our water, sewer, and waste water infrastructure, including pursuing state and federal funds.

Transit Continue to explore the possibility of street car/light rail through NKC with an eye on how the cost will be carried. Work with KCATA to maintain the flex bus service.

Parking Seek solutions to the age-old parking struggle between residents and high school students. Also focus on parking within the downtown and entertainment areas.
